High Peak Borough Council is investing in improvements to parks and green spaces across the Borough, recognising the vital role they play in supporting the health and wellbeing of residents.

The Manor Park project will create an inclusive and accessible space for people aged 14 and over, designed to encourage activity and social interaction. It will complement previous investment in new play areas and equipment for toddlers and older children.

Consultation with park users and the wider community has helped shape the final design. Following feedback, several key revisions have been made:

  • Removal of the football element from the multi-use games area to create a dedicated space for sports such as basketball and netball, with increased fencing height

  • Upgrading the 5-a-side area into a substantial hard-surfaced zone suitable for informal football, tennis, and other sports

  • More informal seating and social spaces to support interaction and casual activity

  • Removal of graphics and features that appeared targeted at younger children

  • Clearer signage to reinforce that the space is for people aged 14+ and explain its purpose

The park café will also form part of the wider improvement programme. Following the recent retirement of the previous tenant, the Council will soon advertise the opportunity to operate the facility with a community-focused approach.

Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, Deputy Leader and Executive Councillor for Regeneration, Tourism and Leisure, said:

I’m absolutely delighted that work on the new Active Zone in Manor Park is about to begin. With a £330,000 investment, we’re making a huge step forward in improving the facilities available – especially for adults and teenagers – so that more people across High Peak can enjoy being active and social in our parks.

We’ve listened carefully to the feedback from local people, and I’m pleased to say we’ve retained the option for playing informal tennis within the upgraded 5-a-side area, alongside space for football and other sports. This means the facilities will be more versatile and appealing to a wider range of park users.

We love our parks and are committed to making them the very best they can be for everyone. This project is all about creating spaces that inspire movement, health and wellbeing – and I can’t wait to see more people enjoying Manor Park and getting active together.
