A new community wellbeing hub is set to be developed in Glossop after nearly £200,000 in funding was awarded by the Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands.
Mayor Claire has granted £191,570 to Glossop-based charity The Bureau from her £3 million Community Development Fund. The funding will support the development of the Gamesley Wellbeing Hub at Gamesley Community Centre, where the Mayor officially launched the fund last year.
Gamesley is one of 10 neighbourhoods across the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) area selected for investment after being identified as facing high levels of disadvantage and having fewer local voluntary and community organisations.
Mayor Claire said:
Communities like Gamesley know better than anyone what they need to thrive, and this funding is about backing local people to lead change in their own neighbourhoods.
This investment will help turn Gamesley Community Centre into a welcoming, accessible hub where residents can connect, support one another, and access health, wellbeing and employment opportunities close to home.
By supporting community-led projects like this one, we’re building stronger, healthier neighbourhoods, boosting pride in place, and making sure everyone across our region has the chance to share in its future.
What the funding will deliver
The project will bring a range of services and opportunities together under one roof, including:
-
Social prescribing and NHS health outreach
-
Activities to reduce isolation and improve wellbeing
-
Volunteering and employability programmes
-
Social, educational and physical activity sessions
-
Skills development and entrepreneurship support
Natalie Rhodes, The Bureau chief officer, said:
We’re delighted to receive this funding, which will help secure Gamesley Community Centre as a welcoming, community-led hub.
It means local people can connect, improve their health and wellbeing, and access new opportunities close to home. We’re proud to be working alongside residents and partners to create something that will make a lasting difference.
In its application, The Bureau outlined plans to improve the building and facilities, expand opportunities for young people and families, and work with local residents and partners – including NHS services – to develop volunteering and skills pathways.
The scheme aims to reduce isolation, improve health outcomes, boost confidence and increase opportunities for employment and active lifestyles, giving local people greater choice and control over their futures.
