Manor Park Active Zone opens with strong community turnout

Glossop’s new Manor Park Active Zone has officially opened, with hundreds of local residents turning out to celebrate the launch of the new community space.
The opening day was packed with activity, energy and community spirit as people joined High Peak Mayor Councillor Dom Starkey, local councillors, council staff and partner organisations to mark the completion of the new accessible and inclusive zone for people aged 14 and over.
The event was supported by MyActive, Pyegrove Tennis Club and play company KOMPAN, who helped bring the space to life with a full programme of free activities.
Visitors were able to try out tennis skills sessions, basketball, netball and football, as well as lawn games and crazy golf. Personal trainers were also on hand to demonstrate the outdoor fitness equipment and show people how to use it safely and confidently.

The new £330,000 Active Zone includes:
- a dedicated basketball and netball area with improved fencing
- a transformed hard-standing sports zone for football, tennis and informal activities
- new seating and social spaces
- clear signage setting out the purpose of the 14+ zone
Mayor Councillor Starkey said:
Thanks to everyone who joined us at the weekend for the fantastic official opening of the Active Zone – the latest in a series of improvements we’ve made in Manor Park.
This has truly been a community-led project so it was brilliant to see so many people enjoying the space and the facilities that they have helped to shape. Providing spaces like this in our parks means that more and more people can be active in ways and at times that suit them.
With the longer days of the spring and summer just around the corner, I’m sure the community will make full use of this new area and enjoy spending time outdoors with friends and family – something that we all know is so good for us.
The Active Zone is the latest stage of wider improvements in Manor Park and follows previous investment in play equipment and spaces for toddlers and older children.
The Council has also confirmed that an opportunity to bid to operate the community café in this area of the park will soon be advertised.
Councillor Rob Baker, Assistant Executive Member, said:
The Council is continuing to invest in our parks and green spaces across the High Peak because they are such valuable spaces which support the health and wellbeing of our communities.
I was delighted to see so many people turn out to enjoy these new facilities in Manor Park and would like to say a big thank you to our amazing parks team for their hard work, in partnership with the local community, in turning this plan into reality.
