Flag raising to mark National Holocaust Memorial Day

Written by on 21/01/2026

The Mayor of High Peak Borough Council, Councillor Dom Starkey, will lead local commemorations to mark National Holocaust Memorial Day on Tuesday 27 January.

The Mayor will take part in two short flag-raising ceremonies in Buxton and Glossop, marking the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz Concentration Camp on 27 January 1945.

Holocaust Memorial Day is an annual moment of reflection, remembering the six million Jewish people murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the victims of subsequent genocides around the world.

Following each flag raising, the Mayor will say a few words in remembrance of Holocaust victims.

The Mayor said:

I would be honoured if residents across both places could join me at one of these commemorations as we remember the victims of the Holocaust and reflect on its enduring significance. Everyone is welcome.
