High Peak MP Steps Up Campaign to Ban Disposable Barbecues from Local Shelves

Written by on 12/08/2025

High Peak MP Jon Pearce is renewing his call for retailers across the constituency to stop selling disposable barbecues, warning they pose a serious threat to the Peak District’s fragile moorland habitats.

The Peak District is one of the UK’s most visited national parks, but its dry moorlands are increasingly vulnerable to devastating wildfires. In recent years, disposable barbecues have been directly linked to major blazes that have destroyed hundreds of acres of wildlife habitat, released harmful air pollution, and stretched emergency services to their limits.

Despite repeated pleas from firefighters, conservation groups, and landowners, many shops and petrol stations in High Peak still stock single-use barbecues.

Speaking about his campaign, Jon said:

“I’m really concerned about climate change and one impact of the rising temperatures in the UK is the increased risk of wildfires.

From Dorset to Edinburgh, the wildfires over the weekend are a warning to us all in High Peak.

We’re so lucky to be surrounded by such natural beauty in High Peak but we can’t let it be taken for granted.

We have already lost over 350 football pitches worth in land in the Peak District in just one fire this year. These wildfires pose a significant threat to natural habitats and biodiversity.

With the fourth heatwave of the summer in full flow, the ideal conditions for a wildfire are there and we need to act quickly to ensure that we do not lose any more of our stunning environment.

I’ve asked all local retailers, from the biggest supermarkets to the independent petrol stations, in High Peak to pull these destructive barbecues from their shelves.

We’ve had some success, but I need local residents’ help to push them into action.”

As part of the campaign, Jon Pearce has launched an online petition urging residents to help pressure all High Peak retailers to stop stocking disposable BBQs.

So far, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons have confirmed they will not sell disposable barbecues this summer, but other stores continue to make them available.

Jon is encouraging as many residents and community groups to add their voice and build momentum for action. Jon added:

“Together we can protect our beautiful Peaks – not just this summer, but for generations to come.”
