University of Derby – Buxton Launches to Continue Further Education Legacy in the Town

Written by on 01/08/2025

From 1 August 2025, the University of Derby’s further education and skills provision will officially be known as University of Derby – Buxton, marking a new chapter in its long-standing commitment to delivering transformative education in the region.

The name change follows the transfer of the Leek campus to Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG), which also takes effect today.

A New Era for Further Education in Buxton

Since 2012, the University has delivered a wide range of post-16 programmes through Buxton & Leek College. With the Leek campus transition complete, the Buxton campus will continue to provide further education as part of the University’s Institute of Education & Skills.

Professor Keith McLay, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Derby, said:

“We are proud of Buxton & Leek College’s contribution to education over the past decade.

Now, University of Derby – Buxton allows us to build on that foundation, aligning more closely with the Government’s place-based skills agenda and ensuring we meet the needs of learners and employers across North Derbyshire.

This is a strategic step that strengthens our regional presence and offers a clearer, more recognisable institutional identity for our further education provision.”

The change is designed to enhance progression pathways from further to higher education, giving learners continued access to high-quality teaching, resources, and support. The University remains committed to delivering programmes that support local industry needs, social mobility, and community development.

The University of Derby has worked closely with NSCG to ensure a smooth handover of the Leek campus, with both institutions confident the move will benefit learners across Staffordshire and North Derbyshire.
