Views sought on protecting public spaces from dog fouling

With dog fouling in public spaces continuing to be an issue across the High Peak, the Borough Council is considering renewing a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) and is now inviting residents, businesses and stakeholders to share their views.

Dog fouling can spoil the enjoyment and appearance of public places including footpaths, parks, recreational areas and other open spaces. The proposed renewal of the PSPO would help promote responsible dog ownership and allow for the continuation of enforcement powers where dog owners fail to remove dog mess from public areas.

Councillor Godfrey Claff, Executive Councillor Community Safety, said: “Dog fouling continues to be an issue that residents raise regularly with us. Whilst most dog owners do behave responsibly, there is a small minority that leave dog mess behind in public places.

“We want everyone to be able to enjoy our shared public spaces that are safe and clean. That’s why we are considering renewing this order but, before we make a decision, we want to hear from you. The consultation is now open and you’ll find full details, including how to respond, on our website so please do get involved and share your thoughts.”

The Council currently tackles dog fouling through education, enforcement, and cleaning activities. This consultation will help determine whether extending the PSPO for another three years is necessary and proportionate.

The closing date for submissions is 23 August. Anyone unable to complete the online response form can request a paper copy from Customer Services staff on Council receptions.
